Chapter 10

Day 2

Kyle

Everyone stopped what they were doing and stared at Taylor in surprise.

Kyle’s voice cracked when he asked, “Mom’s on the radio?”

Taylor said, “Yeah, we just heard her calling for you.”

Before he could ask Taylor to bring the radio, Nicki sprinted through the door and handed it to him.

He took it, clicked the transmit button, and asked, “Lisa, is that you?”

His wife immediately responded, “It’s me, Kyle.”

Relief hit him like a ton of bricks. “It’s great to hear your voice, babe. Where are you?”

“I’m heading south on US-23. I’m at mile marker 72.”

“Wait, are you driving? What’s that noise?”

“I am, but never mind that. Are the girls safe?”

“The girls are safe and with me. They’re perfectly fine.”

“Oh, thank God. I was so worried. I need to pull over. I’m starting to cry, and I can’t focus.”

“Babe, just take it easy. Pull off to the side of the road. We’re coming to get you.”

“Okay.”

“Lisa, listen to me very carefully. Don’t stay in the vehicle. Take the keys and hide in the brush or tree line.”

“Why?”

“Because it sounds like whatever you’re driving is making a lot of noise, and that’s only going to attract people who will want to steal it.”

“Okay, and you heard right. The muffler is shot.”

“Do it now, okay. I’ll be right here while you’re doing that.”

“Got it. I’m feeling a little better. Give me a couple of minutes.”

“Okay. Take your time, but hurry.” Yeah, that made sense. He closed his eyes and pulled himself together. “Make sure no one is watching or coming toward you. Remember, babe, situational awareness.”

“Okay, talk to you in a few minutes. I love you.”

“I love you, too.”

Kyle hadn’t realized it, but he had tears running down his cheeks. No doubt Lisa had quite an ordeal, and it was starting to take a toll on her emotionally. It was for him as well, but he had to be strong, just like his wife was. He didn’t know how far she’d come, but there was no way she was in her Escalade. The fact that she was in someone else’s vehicle told him something must have happened. No one would freely give up a working vehicle without a fight.

Kate tapped him on the shoulder. “Lisa’s not very far from my farm. We could pick her up, and you could drop me off.”

“THAT’S RIGHT! She is.”

Kyle’s mind started racing with what to do next when Lisa’s voice came over the radio again. “I found a good hiding spot, and no one saw me. There aren’t any people on the road.”

“Okay. Just hunker down and try not to make any noise or attract attention. Keep the radio on its lowest volume setting. Okay?”

“Okay, can I talk to the girls?”

“Sure, but it has to be quick. We need to get going.”

Kyle held out the radio to his girls and pressed transmit. Her voice wracked by heartfelt sobs, Taylor said, “Hi, Mom! I miss you so much. I can’t wait to see you.”

Just as emotionally, Nicki said, “Hi, Mom.
